With some trepidation, tonight I asked my dad if I could have his grandmother's map of Ohio. It's the map she used when she taught in a one-room schoolhouse and had a teaching certificate just like Laura Ingalls Wilder's! Dad reminded me that what look like roads on the map are in fact inter-urban railways, I said that was one of the reasons I wanted it.
The map needs a bit of repair, as the handle had almost come off the bottom when Mom and Dad put it up, and it might need some restoration, but since I started work at the courthouse, I know people who know people.
I am going to hang that gorgeous 1897 map of Ohio with all its counties, cities and railways in my beautifully re-painted living room where I can see it every single day.
Cleveland Amory once said that only men could be curmudgeons. Fine. I've set out to be a curmudgeonette. I'm middle-aged, single, owned by a stubborn dog and so white bread all my clothes should say "Wonder." If it weren't for a few little quirks, I would be absolutely indistinguishable from other Midwestern females.

The year is ending nicely
Well, mostly. I think I've burned out on Bubbles & Baubles, but at lease what may be my last post there is one that makes me happy. I enjoyed making up the polish bags, and I'm pleased to have gotten rid of a tiny portion of my ridiculous polish stash.
The probate court has adopted a family for Christmas, and I got to go shopping for a 4 year-old girl. I found some pants, a cute sweater and a Minnie Mouse sweatshirt and pants set, and then found the winter coat I've been wanting for two years. Instant karma!
The courthouse café sends postcard with a coupon every month to the folks on their mailing list, and for December, my coupon was buy one sandwich get one free. Instead of tossing it, I took it down when I bought my lunch on Thursday, and told the cashier to use the free sandwich for the next person to get one. That happened as I was waiting for my sandwich, and it turns out that I bought lunch for one of the domestic court judges. :-) Then I went out and bought a couch from a local business. :-D
Yesterday wasn't very pleasant, because instead of doing my work, I was docketing extensions filed by idiots who didn't get their filings done in time and don't want to be cited. But we got raises for next year, and the day eventually ended.
Today I was at Mom's, aka the second job, and in addition to my usual boring paperwork, I got to make gingerbread cookies and cut out ninja shapes for my nephew to decorate. I even figured out how to work the convection oven by myself!
My brother, sister-in-law and nephews will be here for Christmas, I have the 23rd through the 25th off and the last of my presents are scheduled to arrive on Monday. The house is warm, the dog is getting fat, and all is well.
Love to all of you who took the time to read this--you're what Vio calls "Friends as Family" and you're a big part of why I'm content.

All Hail Rusty!
That would be the owner of the auto shop where I got my second opinion this morning. It's also the auto shop where I got both my brakes and my exhaust fixed for under $300. I had to move some money out of savings, but I saved a thousand bucks I didn't have, so I feel like I came out ahead.
Also, note to self--have Steve do your oil changes, but never trust him with an estimate for anything more complicated!

Hi honeys, I'm home!
There will be a ton of pictures and stories from our Disney adventure, but I'm home safe and sound. Mouse has Vestibular Disease, so my poor old man has to be helped outside to go potty and then back inside and he's not interested in eating, but his tail still wags for me and he's still sweet as pie. Today was a whirlwind of stopping by Mom's house to check the voice messages and print some bank statements and tomorrow I start a new job, as an auditor for the Summit County Probate Courts Accounting Department.
Despite the snow and the mess in my house left by moving 20 houseplants into the kitchen, it's good to be home!

Beautiful day for a road trip
Mom and Dad picked me up at 6:30 yesterday morning for a quick trip to Columbus. It was my first time riding in Dad's new GMC Acadia, and it's a nice car, but the leg room in the back is really minimal! Anyway, we made it to Powell in time to see the younger of my nephews test for and get his orange belt in Taekwondo, and then go out for brunch.
My elder nephew has celiac, and because he didn't want to make his brother choose a different restaurant than his favorite, he ate at the house before we went. This is pretty typical of The Awesome Nacho, who is very considerate of others. This is in complete contrast to his grandfather, who pitched a hissy fit about how expensive cigarettes are when I bummed one from him and then said he'd like to spend $10/month for a cell phone that would live on Mom's bike just in case she needed it. He also made us late leaving for brunch and late leaving to come home, because it's all about him. He was a little surprised and offended when we stopped at Starbucks on the way back and I refused his offer of a coffee. After the little display in the car earlier, I was not going to spend any of his money!
The important thing, though, is that SuperDoughnut did very well on his test, got his new belt, and got brunch with his family on a beautiful day. :)

OhmydogOhmydogOhmydog! Boneshaker movie!
I fell utterly in love with Cherie Priest's writing and her steampunk Northwest when I read Boneshaker for the first time, and now it's going to be made into a movie!
It's about time the film industry branched out from sequels, remakes, and reboots and did something original, and I couldn't be happier for Ms. Priest! I don't know if I'll see it, both because I hate to see a movie once I've read the book and I know what is being left out, and also because I'm a giant wuss and scary movies scare me.
After all, I slept with the lights on for a week after seeing The Blair Witch Project. I'm thinking after seeing steampunk zombies, I might have to sleep with the lights on for a year!
Anyway, congrats to Ms. Priest, and to Boneshaker's alive and undead legions of fans!

MY LITTLE BROTHER WON A GOLD MEDAL!
At this year's Great American Beer Festival, Captain Crossword's Uberbrau won the gold in the American-Style Amber Lager category. Even though the win is listed in the name of the brewpub for which CC is the brewer, it's still his beer, and I could have cried with happiness when he told me. Then I made everyone in the office pay attention while I announced it, then I got to tell Mom when she came back from court, then I told everyone on Goodreads, and next is to tell all my friends on the Lush message board.
I am so pleased and proud and impressed! Way to go, Toulouse! *both thumbs up*

Crying at work is not professional
To sum up:
It's been cold and rainy the last couple of days, my mom is out of town and I miss her, I had the whole thing with the dog mutilation and the oversleeping and my allergies have been kicking my butt, and then this morning I totally whiffed a telephone interview, so by lunchtime I was not a happy camper.
Then a client called. This client is someone Mom has known since the dawn of time. Okay, since they both taught at The University of Akron (as did his wife, who Mom knew first). He wrote a book, and Mom and I both read through it and made suggestions and copyread and all that in July and August. When he called today, he asked me how to spell my name, and I spelled Pamela for him. Then he asked how I spelled my last name, and I shot off all eleven letters the way I usually do.
"No," he said, "That's how you spell your boss's last name."
"Yes. Same last name."
"That's odd that you have the same last name."
"No, she's my mother."
*total astonishment on his part*
*laughing apology on mine* "I thought you knew--I thought all of the University folks knew!"
Anyway, he asked if I was going to be in for the next hour or so and I said yes, and while I sort of wondered why he wanted to know how to spell my name, I figured it was maybe for a little paragraph of acknowledgement at the end of his book.
Nope. He showed up with a check made out to me for $100, and more importantly, the news that he had used 80% of the changes I had suggested.
At the end of a long few days of irritations and such, validation like that made me blink REALLY hard so I didn't cry right then and there.
